HireArt is assisting Toyota Research Institute in hiring a Research Assistant to support the design, execution, and analysis of human-centered research studies.

We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Research Assistant with experience conducting research studies and a strong foundation in both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or a related field, as well as excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

As a Research Assistant, you will:

  • Assist in designing, executing, and analyzing human-centered research studies using quantitative/qualitative methods.

  • Work closely with research scientists to understand, refine, and implement study protocols, ensuring alignment with research objectives.

  • Conduct experiments using driving simulators, prototype vehicles, and/or augmented reality systems.

  • Develop experimental designs and create research materials, including visual, auditory, and interactive stimuli.

  • Administer questionnaires, surveys, and interviews.

  • Analyze and interpret quantitative/qualitative data to generate insights, recommendations, and reports.

  • Manage behavioral datasets and experimentation platform accounts.

  • Conduct literature reviews to synthesize existing research, identify gaps, and inform study design.

  • Assist in drafting/editing research articles.

  • Travel to race tracks as needed to support data collection and field studies.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or a related field

  • Experience designing, conducting, and proctoring studies

  • Experience applying statistical analysis methods such as regressions, ANOVA, and T-tests

  • Experience with qualitative research methods, including conducting interviews, thematic analysis, and coding

  • Experience with programming languages used for data analysis and computational statistics (e.g., Python, R)

  • Exceptional verbal/written communication skills, with the ability to give/receive constructive feedback effectively

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams

  • Eager to learn new technical skills and take initiative in identifying opportunities for impact

  • Interest in the intersection of behavioral sciences and technology


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of basic data handling concepts

  • Familiarity with data preprocessing and parsing techniques, particularly for time series, sensor, or physiological data

  • Experience working with pandas dataframes

  • Exposure to or interest in working with advanced hardware systems, including driving simulators, prototype vehicles, and virtual or augmented reality systems

  • Experience using online experimentation platforms such as Qualtrics or SurveyMonkey

  • Ability to generate study stimuli, including descriptive scenarios, animations, and videos


Commitment: This is a full-time (40 hours per week), ongoing contract position staffed via HireArt. It will be onsite and available to candidates local to the Los Altos, CA area.
