Overview
The Healthcare Access Control Officer plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors at larger and regional hospitals within the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA). This role focuses on operating advanced AI-powered weapon detection and access control systems while delivering exceptional customer service in a healthcare setting.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor AI-based weapon detection and access control systems at hospital entry points
- Engage professionally and empathetically with patients, visitors, and staff during screening procedures
- Respond to system alerts, conduct secondary screening when required, and escalate incidents per NSHA protocols
- Provide clear directions, reassurance, and support to individuals entering the facility
- Maintain accurate documentation of incidents, security concerns, and equipment performance
- Collaborate with healthcare staff, internal security teams, and law enforcement when necessary
- Uphold infection control standards and hospital safety policies
- Support smooth and efficient traffic flow through access control areas
- Contribute to a culture of safety, respect, and inclusivity within the healthcare environment
Requirements
- Ability to obtain a Nova Scotia Security Licence (as per provincial regulations)
- Standard First Aid & CPR certification (CSA Approved)
- Strong verbal communication, customer service, and conflict de-escalation skills
- Ability to operate advanced security technology, including AI-based detection systems
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic in high-pressure situations
- Physically capable of standing for extended periods and responding quickly to incidents
Nice to Have (Optional)
- Prior experience in healthcare security, access control, or law enforcement
- Certifications in Use of Force (UoF) and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (MOAB)
- Candidates without these certifications may enroll in Paladin’s UoF/MOAB training program prior to onboarding
- Training costs are fully covered by Paladin with a 6-month commitment (training is unpaid as it is a prerequisite)
