About BNFS Railway

BNSF operates one of the largest freight railroad networks in North America, with 32,500 miles of rail across the western two-thirds of the United States.

Beyond the basics

Our benefits go beyond the basics of medical, dental, vision and 401(k). We complement these with health, retirement and wellness programs. These benefits allow you to protect and improve health, financial well-being and quality of life for you and your family.

While benefits are different for hourly and salaried employees, all our team members are afforded access to quality medical and retirement benefits.

Retirement

Railroad employees participate in the Railroad Retirement system instead of Social Security. A railroad employee becomes vested in their Railroad Retirement benefit after 60 months of service. For vested employees, all prior Social Security benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits will be combined, coordinated and paid by the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board (RRB). Both the railroad employee and the company pay higher taxes than those paid to Social Security, and the retiree receives a larger benefit than they would under Social Security.

Personal development

We offer learning and development opportunities, including tuition reimbursement for job-related degree programs. Hourly employees may be eligible for up to $5,250 per year to pursue an Associates or Bachelor’s degree. Salaried employees may be eligible for up to $800 per credit hour for undergraduate degrees and up to $1,300 per credit hour for graduate degrees.

As a member of the Berkshire Hathaway family, BNSF employees have access to services and discounts.
