Technology Designer/Estimator

Under the direction of the Preconstruction Manager, the Technology Solutions Designer/Estimator prepares cost estimates and designs for structured cabling and other low voltage systems for installation projects or services to aid management in bidding on or determining price of service or project. Analyze blueprints, schematics, and other documents to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates. Works with the BIM Department to develop AutoCAD and Revit designs for multiple low voltage systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Execute Bid Packages by; (a) preparing work to be estimated, (b) identifying labor, material, and time requirements, and (c) compute the costs. Then present completed estimate to the Project Manager in a timely fashion.
  • Perform material take-offs for estimating project costs by reading off blueprints to identify material, wiring diagrams, fasteners and controls required.
  • Identify the type of lifts or cranes to be used and calculate costs of labor, and permits and report to Project Manager.
  • Coordinate with electrical design estimation team, for rough in cost to be captured in bidding.
  • Provide conceptual budget drawing documents and costs.
  • Work with the BIM Department to Develop CAD/Revit drawings and details of structured cabling design and installation for field crews.
  • Facilitate and meet with customers to discuss their technology needs and formulate a plan and related costs.
  • Research and contact vendors for obtaining material quotes for project.
  • Compile quotes and write proposals for projects and Construction Bulletins.
  • Meet with Project Manager to discuss list of exclusions and inclusions, and any changes in project design, materials, project processes or services provided to determine effects on cost.
  • Attend design and construction meetings to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Compile all time, cost, material, and labor estimates and enter in estimating and pricing software Accubid.
  • Responsible for reviewing and assembly of shop drawing Submittals.
  • Responsible for review quotes and obtaining purchase orders and subcontracts.
  • Use CAD/Revit programs to develop drawings for prefabrication requirements to control cost of project.
  • Create procurement schedule in which vendors and field personnel can schedule material releases.
  • Assist field crews with any material and drawing needs or issues.
  • Coordinate with field crew material releases for prefabrication.
  • Facilitate project closeout, request O&M documents from vendors, review cabling test results, create As Built documents drawings and submit for manufactures cabling warranties.
  • Provide design/build assistance to fellow cost estimators, and answer questions for field crew or other design team members.

Education and/or Experience

Requires 2-4 years of experience with technical knowledge of communication technology practices, material identities, and cost estimating procedures or a Bachelor s degree in an industry-related field, such as construction management, building science, or engineering or a combination of education and experience..

Competitive candidate should have basic understanding of AutoCad and Revit software. BICSI certification is preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as project specification manuals, vendor product literature/catalogs, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and effectively communicate with groups of managers, customers, and employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, percentages, circumferences, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Computer Skills

Must be able to use MS Office software, and skilled in using estimating, pricing, and design software such as Accubid, AutoCad, and Revit.

Reasoning Skills

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly requires to sit; use of hands to finger, handle or touch; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and travel to customer locations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move drawings files, and manuals which require lifting approximately 10lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision and ability to adjust focus.

The employee works in an office setting with normal temperatures and noise level is usually moderate. The employee occasionally must attend project walkthroughs at some customer locations that could expose the employee to be near moving mechanical parts or outdoor weather conditions.
