Works under the supervision a Trades/Maintenance Coordinator and with other Facilities Technicians to maintain and recommend improvements the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration systems in the Research and Academic Zone buildings. This includes the routine and preventative maintenance, repair, and upgrade of HVAC and refrigeration systems, BAS control systems, and the associated administrative duties such as ordering parts, setting priorities for service requests, training other employees, and attending meetings related to changes and impacts to the HVAC system. The position requires the ability if the incumbent to be able to respond to on-call assignments, overtime, and after hours or emergency call-backs as needed.
Function/Duties of Position:
Refrigeration and HVAC Systems Maintenance:
Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair, various systems to include, but not limited to, ice machines, freezers, cold rooms, refrigerators, air handlers, fans, pumps, air supply units, A/C units, heat pumps in accordance with authorities having jurisdiction and OHSU policies, procedures and service level agreement. Charges systems with refrigerant, test coils, valves and connections to assure system is leak proof and properly adjusted; solders or welds refrigeration equipment and related components; performs field maintenance or repair on stationary units and shop repair on portable units.

Building Automation Controls:

Operate, maintain, and repair BAS and associated control devices associated with HVAC systems.

Maintain Parts, Aero Scout Temperature Tracking and Equipment Inventory

Administrative Duties:
Prepares job estimates; keeps accurate record of tests, inspections, repairs and equipment replacement; orders new HVAC/refrigeration parts, supplies, and equipment and maintains parts inventory, obtains parts from offsite vendors using company vehicles, and transports parts and units on site using company vehicle; sets priorities for service requests, trains other employees on technical info required to perform maintenance on HVAC/refrigeration systems and control systems, attending meetings related to changes and impacts to the HVAC/refrigeration systems. Daily work time entry into eAM.

Customer Service:

Assumes role as primary customer service representative for all Facilities & Logistics operations and services on assigned Work Orders, responding to both internal and external customers in a timely, effective, and professional manner, developing positive working relationships.

General Building Maintenance:

Provide backup for Facilities Technicians as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
  • Journey-level refrigeration mechanic experience which shows skill installing, maintaining, and repairing refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems; OR
  • Completion of an approved refrigeration mechanic apprenticeship.
  • Operate desktop and laptop computer, and associated Microsoft Office Suite software to include Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Driver’s License valid in the state of Oregon
  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience/knowledge working with Siemens OR Johnson Controls Building Automation Systems.
  • 4 years’ experience with general knowledge of standard practices, tools, hazards, and safety precautions of mechanical trades and HVAC/refrigeration trade; general knowledge of State and local building code requirements, pneumatic electrical/electronic controls.
  • Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment used in the HVAC/refrigeration systems and HVAC control systems trades, ability to read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, logic diagrams, schematics, specifications, codes, handbooks, and written operational sequences; skill in locating defects, adjusting, installing, and maintaining HVAC/refrigeration systems and equipment, the ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions and the ability to fabricate parts.
  • Universal Refrigerant Handler Limited Maintenance or Low Voltage Electrician License, Brazing Certificate
Additional Details:
  • Working conditions may include working outside in inclement weather, walking, standing, bending and stooping for extended periods of time, lifting carrying heavy objects, crawling in small cramped spaces, working from ladders, scaffolds and other above ground locations including high sloping roofs. Working in extreme temperatures, around moving machinery, and in confined spaces containing high levels of of noise dust and odors could be expected. There is some risk of exposure to dirt, biological, chemical and radiological materials or danger of steam or hot water burns, electric shock, infection or minor injuries that could require the use of OSHA approved Personal Protective Equipment. Normal duties require 40 hours per week. The position does require the ability if the incumbent to be able to respond to on-call assignments, overtime, and after hours or emergency call-backs as needed.
  • Working conditions as noted above may include working outside in inclement weather, walking, standing, bending and stooping for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 75 pounds.
