This recruitment will be used to fill multiple vacancies in the HVAC/R assignment with Facilities Maintenance at either the Facilities Equipment Technician I or Facilities Equipment Technician II level. This recruitment will also be used create a list for future vacancies for all assignment areas.

Facilities Equipment Technician I – HVAC ($54,183.79 - $76,472.86)

A Facilities Equipment Technician I primarily performs skilled work in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC/R) in City buildings. Employees perform a wide variety of skilled tasks in installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC/R. This position may also perform skilled tasks in electrical, plumbing, evaporative coolers, and other mechanical equipment. Work assignments are varied and may be received verbally or in writing. When required, the employee exercises lead supervision over semiskilled and unskilled workers. This class performs other related duties as required.

Employees in this class primarily perform mechanical equipment trades work and are licensed as and/or function as specialists in HVAC. A high degree of competence in one or more of these mechanical equipment trades is required with at least three years of commercial journey-level experience in the trade related to the area of assignment. An employee in this class may be assigned to Facilities Maintenance (example: City Plaza Building or other City-owned properties) or the Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (example: Hohokam Stadium, Fitch Park Training Facility, etc.). Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to a Facilities Equipment Technician II upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and certification. Duties are performed according to general or specific instructions, and work may be inspected by a supervisor or foreman while in progress or upon completion. Responsibilities require the exercise of initiative and independent judgment in troubleshooting malfunctions and determining the proper method of repair.

A Facilities Equipment Technician I is subject to stand-by duty and 24-hour call-out. Employees are required to use appropriate safety equipment and procedures in performing assignments. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Facilities Equipment Technician II – HVAC ($59,739.06 - $84,314.26)

A Facilities Equipment Technician II in the HVAC assignment is responsible for performing skilled work in installing, maintaining, and repairing of heating, ventilation, air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems in City buildings. This position may also perform skilled tasks in electrical, plumbing, evaporative coolers, and other mechanical equipment.

This position is responsible for independently planning and completing large maintenance projects which includes developing a scope of work, obtaining proposals, securing funding, awarding the project, following through to a successful completion, and documenting. This position may also act as a lead worker for Facilities Equipment Technician I or Trades Workers on various projects. Work assignments are varied and may be received verbally or in writing. This class performs other related duties as required.

Facilities Equipment Technician II is expected to demonstrate a greater specialized knowledge and work independently by prioritizing their time, utilizing problem solving methods, and demonstrating good judgment and a high degree of tact and diplomacy. Responsibilities require the exercise of initiative and independent judgment in troubleshooting malfunctions and determining the proper method of repair.

A Facilities Equipment Technician II is subject to stand-by duty and 24-hour call-out. Employees are required to use appropriate safety equipment and procedures in performing assignments. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Facilities Equipment Technician I – HVAC

Minimum Qualifications Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to successful completion of an HVAC apprenticeship program (must provide written certification). Considerable (3 - 5 years) commercial, journey-level HVAC experience.

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Good (1 - 3 years) experience in a related trade and knowledge of computers and Energy Management Systems are highly desirable. Training and experience in low temperature refrigeration.

Facilities Equipment Technician II - HVAC

Minimum Qualifications Required. Considerable (3 - 5 years) commercial journey-level HVAC experience. Successful completion of a four-year HVAC apprenticeship program (must provide written certification); OR state-issued HVAC journeyman card (must provide proof); OR provide documentation of ten years of journey-level HVAC work experience.

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Considerable experience with Computer Managed Maintenance System (CMMS) software and energy management systems.

Facilities Equipment Technician I and II

Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date. Must possess an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refrigeration certification card. Due to the required access to all City buildings for this position, an individual receiving a conditional offer of employment from the City of Mesa must pass a background investigation through the City of Mesa Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to commencing employment with the City of Mesa to allow full, unescorted access to Police facilities (Facilities Maintenance by assignment).

Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
